Valdottavo 2005

Maps and Travelling Directions

A couple of maps are now included, so mark this page for future reference.

A third map, of Lucca, has been added.

From Lucca (2nd map), you follow the river north until you get to the Valdottavo turnoff.  (Diecimo is straight ahead and Valdottavo is more or less under the letter "V" on the map.) Full details are given below, but if in doubt:

Follow the signs to Abatone

When you get to Valdottavo

Turn left (it is signposted), and follow the road to the village.   Pass through the village until you get to the "End of Valdottavo" sign ("Valdottavo" with a cross through it).  The Studio is 100m or so beyond this sign, on the main road, to the left.  You will go round a gentle left bend - immediately afterwards you will see "Studio Camnitzer" signposted to the left.  The road will have started on a gentle ascending incline by this point (Valdottavo is in the foothills of the Appenines).

If you are a hostel (Les Vignes) dweller, the hostel is round the next bend, but I suggest you call in to the Studio first to make yourselves known.

Sorry about the NAF layout - I haven't had time to format it properly yet:-)

Finding Valdottavo

Take a train or drive from Pisa to Lucca.  From there you can take a train to Diecimo (near the top right corner of the map) and then a taxi to Valdottavo (just below Diecimo).

Lucca

This map shows you how to get into and out of Lucca.  The map is on its side - references to left/right etc refer  to the paper orientation, with the proper direction in brackets.  Thus the information bureau - yellow blobby i - is on the top (west) of the map.
NB there is no significance attached to the hand-marked crosses on the map!

Railway Station

This is on the left (south) of the map.

Bus station

This is on by the information bureau on the top (west) of the map.  Buses from here go direct to Valdottavo.  You have to purchase your  ticket before you get onto the bus.  From Valdottavo it's a 10-min walk - or ring the Studio (there's a public phone box).

By car

You need to get onto the ring road at the right(north) of the map.  Going top to bottom (west to east), cross the roundabout and take the next left (north) - Viale M Civitali - indicated Camaiore othe map.  The road sign will point to Abatone.   You must not take a sign that does not point to Abatone until you get to Valdottavo.

Once on the road, you will be on the east side of the river (map above).  Cross to the west side as soon as possible - this will a left turn immediately before the Esselunga supermarket.   Follow the "new road" (the Ponte a Moriano bypass, which is not on the map), through a short tunnel. Turn left at the T-junction (effectively re-joining the road you left at Esselunga) and then look for signs to Valdottavo on your left. Be aware that the road here is full of long and endless curves, so do not drive too fast! The final stretch, approaching the Valdottavo turnoff, is straight, with trees on both sides of the road. There is a large paper mill on the left just before Valdottavo turn-off, also on the left.
